Permits -- "Let Me Count The Ways" -- to Pay for Building a Home!

After getting the building permit yesterday afternoon, I had to go get a plumbing permit and file for the well permit (which will be granted once they confirm where I am going to be putting it), I will have spent the better part of $2000 in the last two days for these three permits, and I alreaday have zoning and septic system permits from earlier in the spring!

We are truly ready to legally begin the work!

And, I have an appointment with the Electric Cooperative to set the location for temporary service, and we will then be ready to have power set up...

So, here are a couple of pictures of the land after some more mowing and after posting the permits ...

Hopefully, pictures next week will show a real driveway and maybe some site leveling and possibly even the foundation dug out...

If you can see the sign in the center -- this is the permits...
This is just to show how much of the mowing out front is done -- not much, but it is coming along...
Standing half way up the driveway, this is the house site, etc.  More mowed than last week, but still a LOT to mow!

Tonight, I bought a piece of 2'x4' plywood and some folding table legs, a couple of U-bolts, and got the house plans laminated...  Then, I came home and put together a simple table to fold up and bring with me to the site to have waterproof plans on site each day...  Of course, I have plans for the individual sub-contractors, but having the approved plans on site attached to a table will be nice...  Here are a few pictures of it...

Staking Out Our Territory...

Dawn and I went on a "stake out" over the weekend...  We went out and started measuring and marking where we want to put future out buildings and driveway location, etc.  No new pictures yet, but not really anything special to show anyway...

6 acres of deep weeds is a lot to mow down!  I clearly need to make friends with one of my farming neighbors!  Meanwhile, I'll continue mowing a little at a time until I get at least the front half finished...

We went at 7:30 this Monday morning to meet with the building inspector to discuss some minor questions I had, and he indicated that he'll be ready to issue my building permit this afternoon!  So, we have only one more permit -- a well permit, and that should be trivial!

The driveway should be put in later this week, though my excavator has some jobs to do early this week.  The driveway will sure make life easier so I won't have to continue parking on the side of the road...

Back to Blogging

After a LONG sabbatical, I'm finally going to resume my blog...

Of course, much has changed since my last entry, not the least of which is we have undertaken the "home project" of a lifetime...  We are going to build a new home!

Actually, "we" aren't going to do much beside pay the bills and oversee the work.  I am hiring all of the subcontractors, and we have gone through the process of designing the house and planning everything out.

To date, we have completed the following tasks which are all prerequisite to the building itself:

  1. Selected and purchased a 6 acre lot in western, central Ohio.

  2. Worked out a home design, and had it drawn up (not to mention countless tweaks).

  3. Requested quotes for every aspect of the building process from putting in the driveway to painting and trim work.

  4. Secured financing (though, there are no "typical" homes in the area that are comparable to our home).

  5. Staked off the rough house location, and had the septic system location marked on the land.

  6. Applied for and received zoning and health permits, and well on the way to getting the building permit as well.

So, in a nutshell, we are just now about to begin the actual building process.  We have already put in 6 months of work, and now, we are hopeful that we will have a completed home in another 6 months.

After signing the loan papers yesterday, I went out and mowed the house site and the (future) driveway so my excavator knows where we want each.  I took some pictures after mowing the thick thigh-deep weeds, but it is difficult to get a sense of things -- looks like a partially mowed field -- which is what it is :)

Here are the pictures from yesterday -- oh, I should mention that a few months ago, I was tired of doing nothing but "preparation", and decided to put up the mailbox...  Stay tuned as we (hopefully) begin to make weekly progress, and I find time to post updates...

The mailbox...

From the road, looking up the driveway...

Half way up the driveway, it splits, and goes around the house...  We will turn to the left to get to the garage (in the back).

From the "fork" in the driveway -- looking to the right...
Proceeding around the driveway to the left...  The deck will be to the right.

From the driveway -- looking toward the house where the deck will be.

From the driveway -- looking where the two garage doors will be -- on the left side of the house at the back.

At the back corner of the house, looking out over the house site toward the road.
From the deck -- just outside the door, looking out over the land.  We will consider this the front of the house even though it overlooks our land instead of the road.
From the front porch -- the formal "front door" does face the road.

From the front porch, looking toward the front corner of our land.
